In general, there are 4 types of Identity Theft that
can effect a person‘s life.
1. Financial ID Theft
2.Criminal Identity Theft / Impersonations
3. Identity "Cloning" / Assumption
4. Business Identity Theft
Financial Identity Theft is most commmon.
This is when someone uses your name, social
security number, birth date, mothers maiden name
or other identifying information for their benefit.
Once a person has this basic information,
credit cards can be applied for, loans can be taken
out, vehicles can be leased, or you can pay for
someone else to go on your dream trip to Hawaii!
Finances and credit can be effected quickly.
Until the damage has been cleard up with each
of the Credit Bureaus, this can effect if a personcan get credit, how much credit a person can get,
if a person can rent an apartment or even if one is
offered that job that your really wanted.
can get credit, how much credit a person can get,
if a person can rent an apartment or even if one is
offered that job that your really wanted.
The time it takes to investigate how much of
your financial world has been compromised and to
clean up the credit report is long, drawn out and
detail oriented.
FYI- this theft can occur with an Adult, a Minor or
even a Deceased Person. I once received a phone
call from a power company in another state looking
for my niece who was 10 at the time because she
had not paid her electric bill.
Impersonations or Criminal Identity Theft as
another type of Identity Theft. Someone can either
assume your identity to commit a crime OR someone
can assume your identity when detained or
questioned by law enforcement. In this form of the
crime, the thief assumes the victim’s identity to
either commit crimes or to distance themselves from
crimes.
This type of Identity Theft can have a great
impact and can even result in criminal records or
outstanding arrest warrants.
Less prevalent is Identity "Cloning" /
Assumption of Identity. In this case,
someone assumes your identity. In this form of the
crime, the thief completely assumes your identity to
begin a "new life". The thief lives and works as, well,
another person! This is done when there is a reason
someone does not want to be found or if there is a
need to totally reinvent themselves because of
mistakes made in the past the directly effect
everyday. The impact may be broad ranging from
additional tax liability to credit fraud.
Business / Commercial Identity Theft
is prevalent and are not immune from identity
thieves. In this form of the crime, thieves obtain
credit cards, services and supplies, and open
accounts in the business’ name.
Often by the time the theft is discovered, many
thousands of dollars of expenses have accrued and
the business’ credit rating may be severely affected
which could effect the individual owner in a
substantial way from effecting what loans are
available to the good will of the community.
New Federal FACTA Laws need to be complied with
